Second Life is an online world in a 3D virtual environment.  You create an avatar (a virtual being which may or may not represent you — it’s completely up to you), and this avatar can then intermingle with other people’s avatars in this virtual reality worlk.  You can communicate with "others" via text messages or even voice chat.

You’re not likely going to be lonely in Second Life, as it has a population in excess of 10 million avatars. If you prefer not to be bothered by anyone, you can easily set a "Busy" notice which informs anyone nearby that you cannot receive messages from them at the moment.  The inhabitants of Second Life are from all demographics and occupations.  Most countries and a lot of languages are represented. You have the option of attending numerous live events, from online music concerts to highbrow literary discussions to rummage sales for virtual clothes and other products.

You can buy or rent land and numerous other items if you care to on Second Life.  The currency on Second Life, called Linden Dollars, can be transferred to real dollars at the going rate. This varies but is currently around $266 Linden Dollars (or L$256) to the U.S. $1.  Believe it or not, but there are avatar land owners who have made $1,000,000 (that’s one million U.S. Dollars!!) doing business on Second Life.
